Open Records Request

An Open Records Request (ORR) is a powerful tool in Texas that can also cost you time and money. If there's information you seek, always ask for it nicely before submitting an ORR. If you encounter a brick wall, then you can see what information an ORR will get you.

To submit an ORR to the City of San Marcos, you can either use their Open Records Request form(pdf) or write your own letter. To submit it, send it to:

City Clerk's Office-City Hall
630 E. Hopkins
San Marcos, Texas 78666
(512) 393-8090

or fax it to (512) 396-1576

or email it to openrecordsrequest@sanmarcostx.gov

A Few Tips

A few things to keep in mind. When asking for an ORR, always ask for an electronic version first. This is prevent a hefty price tag for accessing public information.

Select your wording very carefully. You might not get what you want if you don't phrase your request as specific as possible. Remember that lawyers and legal minds usually review requests, so be as clear and specific as possible.

Pay a visit to the State Attorney General's website. They have a ton of useful information that can greatly assist you. Keep an eye out for their publications in the sidebar.
